A 30-year-old man is dead following a police-involved shooting outside Toronto Pearson International Airport early Thursday morning, according to authorities.

Peel Regional Police reported that officers were responding to a call regarding a “man in distress” in an SUV parked in the departure area of Terminal 1.

According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the man produced a firearm, prompting three officers to open fire.

The man was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital, the SIU confirmed. A photo from the scene published by The Canadian Press shows a body covered by a yellow tarp outside the terminal.

Peel paramedics were dispatched at 6:56 a.m. but initially stated that no individuals had been transported from the scene. The area around Terminal 1 was cordoned off, with several evidence markers visible near a grey SUV and a large police presence.

The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police where death or serious injury occurs, has assigned six investigators and three forensic specialists to the case.

Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured in the incident and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Ontario Provincial Police closed road access from Highway 409 to Terminal 1, and video footage shared on social media showed traffic congestion and a strong police response near the terminal.

The investigation is ongoing.
