pearson--

A man was shot by Peel Regional Police at Toronto Pearson International Airport's Terminal 1 early Thursday morning, triggering a significant emergency response at Canada’s busiest airport.

According to police, the incident occurred around 6:56 a.m., when officers responded to reports of a man in distress in a grey vehicle near the departures area. The vehicle's trunk was open, and several evidence markers were seen behind it. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed that investigators are now on the scene.

Peel Police stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the incident was “isolated” and assured the public that there were no ongoing threats to safety. No officers were injured during the incident.

While the man’s condition has not been officially confirmed, paramedics responded swiftly to the scene. Witness images show multiple police vehicles and flashing lights, with travelers wheeling luggage around the scene.

Although security wait times at the airport remain within normal limits, the situation has caused notable disruptions. Terminal 1's departures roadway remains closed, with all traffic rerouted through the arrivals area. Highway 409 access to Terminal 1 is also closed.

Public transportation is being affected as well, with the 900 Airport Express bus detouring via Terminal 3. The UP Express service to the airport remains operational.

The SIU, an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police where death, serious injury, or firearm discharge occurs, is currently examining the case.
