Toronto Pearson Airport Shooting: What Really Happened?

pearson--

Thursday morning at Toronto Pearson International Airport didn’t go as planned for many travelers. Terminal 1 was suddenly thrown into chaos after a police-involved shooting left one man dead and sent waves of confusion through the airport.

Here’s What We Know So Far

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed that the incident involved police officers and took place just outside the departures area of Terminal 1. A man was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured.

According to Peel Regional Police, this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Police, Paramedics, and Travel Disruptions

The shooting happened around 7 a.m., prompting an immediate response from police and paramedics. The Ontario Provincial Police closed off roads leading to Terminal 1, and airport authorities began rerouting both vehicles and foot traffic through the arrivals section.

The 900 Airport Express bus was also forced to detour to Terminal 3, making travel more complicated for those trying to catch their flights.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Tense Scene

Courtney Heels, a local news reporter, posted a video showing a massive police presence and traffic backing up around the terminal. One traveler told her that dozens of officers showed up carrying rifles.

Chris Rhind, a passenger checking in at the time, said he heard a series of loud popping noises. Another traveler, Nicole Verkindt, said she was only about 100 feet from the scene when she heard what sounded like eight gunshots in quick succession, followed by the arrival of police and ambulances.

What Triggered the Shooting?

Details are still emerging, but a police source told the Toronto Sun that a man initially interacted with an officer, walked away, then returned with a firearm and pointed it at police. That’s when officers opened fire.

The SIU is now leading the investigation and promises to release more information as it becomes available.

What Travelers Should Know

  • Access to Terminal 1 departures is closed. Use the arrivals area instead.
  • The Terminal 1 parking garage remains open.
  • Expect delays and possible detours, especially if you’re arriving by car or using public transit.
  • Flights are still operating, but it’s wise to check with your airline for the latest updates.

What Happens Next

SIU investigators are on site and will be digging deeper into what exactly happened and why. For now, operations at Pearson are returning to normal, but the event has certainly left many travelers shaken and searching for answers.
